Thank you for your interest in Hand Me Down Dobes!
We are currently accepting applications in most of Ohio, and the bordering areas of Michigan, West Virginia, Northern Kentucky, Northwest Pennsylvania, and Indiana. This limited area is due to our requirement for one of our qualified volunteers to perform a visit in your home as part of the adoption process.
Generally, it is the policy of HMDD, not to place a dog with a family who have children under the age of eight, but we do consider each application on a case by case basis. Although not required, a physical fence is always the safest and most desirable. If an applicant has underground/invisible type fencing or no fence, they will not necessarily be approved for all dogs.
Our adoption fee is $300 for dogs over 1 year, and $400 for pups 12 months and younger. A $15 service fee will be added if paying by credit card.
Please take a moment to download and read the Adoption Agreement you will be expected to sign if/when you adopt one of our Dobermans.
1. Application: You must complete an application in order for the adoption process to move forward.
*** The application may be completed online by clicking HERE. ***
If you'd prefer a hard-copy application, download the application by clicking HERE, print it, complete it, and mail it to the following address:
Hand Me Down Dobes, P.O. Box 12325, Columbus, OH 43212-0325
Or fax to: 1-844-325-0446
We will use your application to get a general idea of what characteristics you are looking for in a pet. We will also contact your veterinarian for a reference and ensure your current and/or previous pets are spayed or neutered, immunized, and on appropriate preventatives.
2. Home Visit: A HMDD volunteer in your area will contact you to schedule a home visit. We perform home visits to the homes of all prospective adopters. This visit allows us to get to know you and the environment in which the dog will live. It helps us better determine which dog is the best match for your household and lifestyle.
Our adoption success rate is quite high and we are proud of our program and its standards. If we do not currently have a dog in the program that matches your needs, we will retain your application until one finds its way to us. We encourage you to attend our monthly adoption event and check our website regularly for new dogs that may be more compatible with your family. Keep in mind that you may like the look of a particular dog, but that does not necessarily mean the dog's personality is a match for your family or lifestyle.
